The new art gallery in Eastbourne, East Sussex, will provide state of the art gallery and exhibition spaces and education facilities. The new building stands alongside the Congress Theatre, the Winter Garden and Devonshire Park Theatre, and creates a true cultural centre for the town. The gallery will open to the public in 2008. The New Towner Trust invites you to support the final stage of fundraising for Eastbourne's new art gallery by buying a giclée print of 'Lombardy Poplars'. The Ravilious Family and the Private Owner have given special permission for this painting to be produced in a limited, very high quality edition. Biography Eric Ravilious was born in Eastbourne, East Sussex. He studied at Eastbourne School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. He taught for a time at the Royal College and at the Ruskin Drawing School in Oxford. He was talented as both designer and artist producing wood engravings for book illustrations and designs for pottery and glass. He is known for his watercolours, often of English rural subjects. In 1939 he was appointed an Official War Artist and produced an outstanding body of work, including his watercolours of submarines. He died in 1942 in an air-crash off Iceland. His work is very highly regarded. The largest collection of his work is held in the Towner Collection in Eastbourne's Art Gallery. |
