WATCH OUT ! Rogue trader warning from Neighbourhood Watch

" Police in Eastbourne are warning residents to be on their guard for rogue traders after a recent incident elsewhere in the town.
Four men called at a house and told the occupants that work needed to be done to the property. One man started to remove some tiles from a roof, while another kicked over a garden wall – they then demanded money from the occupants to fix the ‘problems’ they had identified.
Rogue traders pretend to be ‘qualified’ builders or tradespeople.
They often call unannounced, particularly targeting vulnerable people, and deliberately overcharge for unsatisfactory goods and services.
This can include charging for unnecessary work and damaging property deliberately in order to obtain money.

Police Community Support Officer Stephen Parsons said: “Police advice is to never buy goods and services from people calling unexpectedly at your door.
Use a spy hole, chain or window to check before answering and always ask for proof of identity.
If you have any doubt – keep them out.
If you are suspicious about a caller inform police on 101 or in an emergency dial 999.

GEMS, MAGIC & PIES - SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE - (Yes ...pass the mince pies!)

Architectural gems of Eastbourne revealed
Saturday 21st November, 7.30pm
Edward Dickinson will give an illustrated talk on his new book: Eastbourne in Detail at St John’s Parish Hall in Meads Street on Saturday 21st November. The book was launched to critical acclaim in the Grand Hotel at the end of September, with the 200 pages containing over 340 beautiful photographs of the town’s buildings and architecture. There’s so much beautiful detail, things we’d so often walk by without noticing and all the buildings featured are accessible from the street or are open to the public.
Admission is free, just turn up on the night. The talk starts at 7.30pm and will last for around one hour. Drinks will be available on the night and the book will be on sale for £20.

Marvellous Meads Magic
Friday 27th November, from 2.30pm
The team behind Meads Magic have been hard at it to provide another perfect afternoon of fabulous festive shopping and fun. Now in its fourth year, Meads Magic is a firm favourite on the Eastbourne Christmas calendar.
The festive street market will include a variety of stalls showcasing local handicrafts, seasonal gifts, tasty street food and much more, all accompanied by live tunes from the fantastic Eastbourne band 'The Dirty Martinis'.
There will also be plenty of magical fun for the children and local school choirs and the cast of the Royal Hippodrome Theatre Company's Christmas Variety Show will be singing in the street to set the scene. From 4pm, don’t miss the traditional Harvey’s Dray with shire horses, Monty and Winston delivering a very special visitor. We hope to see you there.

MCA Christmas get together
Don’t forget the Mince Pie and Mulled Wine party on Saturday 12th December from 11am to 1pm in the Parish Hall.

REDUCED PARKING IN MEADS STREET
Dear All,
Following the consultation process in May, ESCC are now proposing to severely reduce the parking in Meads Street and Matlock Road - you may have received an unaddressed letter through your door but see page 54 of the attached drawings.pdf if not.
ESCC have today confirmed that the current bay on the East side of Meads St is approx. 66 metres, which would be removed and replaced by 2 proposed bays on the West side measuring 6.5m and 9m. The current bays on the South side of Matlock Rd are 22m and 20m, and it is proposed to replace these with a single bay on the North side, just 23.5m - reducing the total space from 108m to only 39m.

Their reasons for the change (see attached Statement of Reasons) are:
a) to provide more Permit Holder parking bays
b) to maintain traffic flow
c) to improve loading provisions
d) to prevent vehicles obstructing and damaging the footpath and prevent obstruction to through traffic.
I think the salient points are:
1) The net loss of 69 metres of 2-hour parking (approx 14/15 cars)
2) If the proposed loading bay is occupied (legitimately, or by shoppers etc) vehicles will then stop on the East side of Meads St, thereby causing the same problems as at present.
3) Since the Co-Op have used Matlock Rd to unload, Meads St has become clearer. (Maybe a loading bay in Matlock would be better?)
? 4) If traffic is slowed by parked vehicles, any unwary (elderly) pedestrians crossing the road will be safer.

If you have any other points, please circulate them by using 'reply to all' on your email so everyone can consider them for their own objections. Objections MUST be made by November 17th to:

post: Parking, ESCC, County Hall, St. Anne's Crescent, Lewes BN7 1UE
online: https://consultation.eastsussex.gov.uk/economy-transport-environment/eastbourne-parking-review-2015-formal-consultation
Remember, 14/15 cars could be 14 to 30+ potential customers at least every 2 hours - can we afford NOT to object?

Kind regards,
Peter

MEADS WINE BAR ~ Sourcing local products
Hello,
I wonder if you could help me.
I currently live in Buxton Road but work away during the week and I would like to open a business in Meads Street.
I am looking to open a small Wine Bar, serving good wines by the glass and a specific range of food and drinks, something to give a real Café feel to the area.
I would also like to involve other local business in the venture by sourcing as many products as I can from local supplyers.florists, wine shop, deli etc.
The business would be aimed at local residents.
I am now looking for premises that I could rent up to about 600 sq ft, anything bigger would not create the right atmosphere for what I am trying to achieve.
The minimum area would be 400 sg ft.
If you do know anyone who could help me I would greatly appreciate it
Kindest regards
Nigel Harding

NEWS FROM THE MEADS MAGIC TEAM ........PUT MAGIC IN YOUR DIARY.. FRIDAY 27 NOVEMBER..

Meads Magic Update:
The chosen charity this year is Eastbourne Mencap and we are delighted to be supporting them.

The very popular “Dirty Martini Swing Band” has been booked for the event.

We are proposing a best-dressed window competition for traders. Based on their excellent displays in the past Grand Flowers have agreed to judge this. The prize for the winning business will be a Christmas party menu meal for up to 6 people in The Ship to include 1 bottle of house wine.

In addition to activities that we have put on in the past, this year’s event will include a children’s magic show.

As last year the timings for the actual event are 2.30pm to 7.30pm - Friday 27th November

We still have quite a bit of planning taking place and trust we can rely on your support for this year. If you have any business updates that could help us plan ahead we would be grateful if you could contact us with details.

Hope you enjoy the rest of the Summer

The Meads Magic team.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
Three of our Meads NW Scheme Coordinators have moved away and I am seeking replacement volunteers to keep the Schemes running. Anyone willing to volunteer help in the Meads Ward please contact me.

There have been reports recently of opportunistic doorstep Cold Callers looking for odd jobs or to view/purchase any antique property. Remember to keep doors and windows closed and locked when absent from the home in this warmer weather even if you are enjoying the garden, perhaps a barbeque and distracted from goings-on elsewhere.

And, there has also been telephone callers portraying themselves as Microsoft offering to clear Windows problems and others offering help with PPI and Motoring accident claims. It appears that the more elderly of our community are being targeted with such calls.

In all types of cold calling approaches,- Avoid dealing with them. As with other forms of personal dealings, it is better the devil you know than the one you don't.

Did Guy Gibson VC. live in Meads Road ?
Guy Gibson VC.
Am right in thinking that Guy Gibson V,C. resided, at least during WWII, in Meads Road? When we first moved here in 2001 I used to chat with an elderly - albeit sprightly - gentleman who used to walk over from Old Town quite often with his three dogs of various sizes. He told me that shortly before the war, his mother had run away from his drunken & violent father, making her way with her little son from Cork to England. She found domestic work in Meads Road & they stayed there throughout the war.

He remembered watching the bombing in Meads. I am not certain which house he & his mother lived in, but he said that Guy Gibson lived with his mother in, I think, the house next door. He also mentioned a titled couple who lived in a lovely house on the corner - now The Moorings. I wish now that I had asked more questions...It is some years now since I last saw him, alas.

Barley Sugar has teamed up with Heaths Butchers of Old Town

Barley Sugar are pleased to announce that they have now teamed up with Heaths Butchers of Green Street, Old Town and are now selling fresh local meats in their deli in Meads Street.
As well as a daily selection of local farm meats, chicken and local game, they will also be stocking Mr Heaths homemade sausages and home cured bacon.
The shop can also order any meat in any quantity for collection the very next morning.
And the best news is that the prices have all been set to be in direct competition with the supermarkets prices, so most items are not only from local farms, but also a similar, or better price than the supermarkets.

Please feel free to pop into the shop to take a look, find out more or discuss your requirements.

NOT ALL THIEVES ARE STUPID

1. LONG-TERM PARKING
Some people left their car in the long-term parking at Windsor while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the information on the car's registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the people's home in Essex and robbed it. So I guess if we are going to leave the car in long-term parking, we should NOT leave our registration/insurance cards in it, nor the remote garage door opener. This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology.

2. GPS:
Someone had their car broken into while they were at a hockey game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the arena and specially allotted to hockey fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the hockey game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.

3. CELL PHONES:
I never thought of this! This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists names on her cell phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet, etc., was stolen. Twenty minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says, "I received your text asking about our PIN number and I replied a little while ago." When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text "hubby" in the contact list and got hold of the PIN. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of this story a. Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mum, etc. b. And, very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back. c. Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet "family and friends" who text you.

4. PURSE IN THE GROCERY CART SCAM:
A lady went grocery-shopping at a local mall and left her purse sitting in the child seat of the cart while she reached something off a shelf. Wait till you read the WHOLE story! Her wallet was stolen, and she reported it to the store personnel. After returning home, she received a phone call from the Mall Security to say that they had her wallet and that although there was no money in it, it did still hold her personal papers. She immediately went to pick up her wallet, only to be told by Mall Security that they had not called her. By the time she returned home again, her house had been broken into and burgled. The thieves knew that by calling and saying they were Mall Security, they could lure her out of her house long enough for them to burgle it.

EODS Productions proudly present
Alan Ayckbourn’s
“A Chorus Of Disapproval”
at The Royal Hippodrome Theatre

Wednesday 25th Feb – Saturday 28th Feb 2015.
Audience’s love a play within a play, and no more so than this hilarious comedy!
Guy, a shy widower, attempts to escape loneliness by joining P.A.L.OS (Pendon Amateur Light Operatic Society) who are staging a production of John Gay’s “The Beggar’s Opera”.
By accident rather than by design (in fact, by not saying "no" to anything, be it a request to obtain confidential information from his company or an offer of illicit sex) he advances from a small part to the lead.

As the play progresses Ayckbourn skilfully draws parallels between 'The Beggars Opera' and the real life “goings on” of these wannabe actors.
It’s a show packed with classic tunes, emotional drama, romantic rivalry and petty small town politics – not to mention laugh out loud comedy!! Performances Nightly @ 7.30pm (Matinee Saturday 28th Feb @ 2.30pm)
Tickets: £13 (Concessions £10) Call 01323 412000 or visit the Royal Hippodrome and Congress Theatre box offices
