46A Meads Street has been let...

I should like to express my thanks to everyone in Meads for their forbearance during the period when the shop at 46A Meads Street (the former bridal gowns shop) has been unoccupied and (in the last few weeks ) boarded up.

I am glad to be able to tell you that a new lease has now been signed, and the shop will be opening soon as a lettings agency.

Over the next few weeks the new tenant will be working on preparing the premises for business, and I am confident that once it is functioning again 46A Meads Street will present an attractive aspect to the street.

A happy Christmas and New Year to everyone in Meads.

46A Meads Street

I am the freeholder of 46/46A Meads Street.
Friends and neighbours in Meads Street will have noticed that the windows of the shop at 46A Meads Street (previously the bridal gowns business which traded under the name of the Fitting Room) are being boarded up.
I regret the need to have this done, and I should like to apologise to everyone in the street - traders, residents and shoppers - for the aesthetic effect of this on the appearance of the street, particularly in the run-up to Christmas.

However, I have had no choice in the matter, as the insurer of the building has required me to have the windows boarded up until the shop is occupied again. I hope this period will be kept to a minimum and that this attractive shop front will be in use as soon as possible and properly maintained .

In previous years, Meads traders have had a Christmas tree installed in front of the gates of 46 Meads Street. I do not know whether this is happening this year - I would very happy to see the tree there, but unfortunately the insurers have also required me to turn off the electricity supply to the shop, and so there can be no Christmas tree lights this year.
In fact the electricity has been cut off, as the previous tenant did not pay the electricity bill (or, for that matter, the rent).

Beachy Head Farm Dairy

Beachy Head Farm Dairy Meads Street

Sometime in the not so distant past this local farm dairy supplied Meads with fresh produce. The Co-op now replaces it, still with the entrance at an angle. Not much is known about the dairy....does anyone in Meads or anywhere on the planet know anything about it?

Emma Chisset

Emma Chisset

Monica Dickens the famous author (great-grand-daughter of Charles Dickens) was on a book signing tour in Australia in 1964.
An old lady approached Miss Dickens with a book and asked in a broad Australian accent "Emma chisset?"
The writer took the book and signed it with a flourish;
"To my dear friend, Emma Chisset." The old lady took the book back, read it and asked "Emma Chisset Oo's that?"
"Isn't that the name you gave me" asked the author.
"No, no, no," said the lady emphatically, "I said, Emma chisett!"
Miss Dickens was still puzzled, so the old lady repeated her sentence, much more slowly, "em mach isett?"
Then, with growing irritation and more slowly still, "How much is it?"

This true incident inspired a witness, one Alistair Morrison, to coin the term Strine and publish Let Stalk Strine, a wonderful compendium of the whimsicalities of Australian speech, written under the pseudonym Afferbeck Lauder (alphabetical order).

Eastbourne Get Fit Get Slim Group.

You don't have to be overweight to join this group, you just need to have an interest in developing or maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
I am not talking about getting super fit in lycra, running marathons etc, but just moderately fit and healthy in mind, body and spirit.
Getting fit and getting slim shouldn't have to cost money, we don't need to join a gym to get regular exercise, we could walk by the beach, or swim in the sea!
To be mentally and spiritually fit we need to address our emotional state of mind and what better way to do that than to share feelings and ideas with supportive friends.
We don't need to join a weight loss club, we could meet and have weigh ins and give each other support and dietary advice without giving someone else a fiver for the privilege.
Bet we all have something inspirational to share.
All ages and genders welcome.
JOIN if you would like to have regular meetings, weigh-ins and share ideas and moderate exercise activities with other like minded people.
