A first for the MCA but hopefully not the last. Quizmaster (or Headmaster) Simon Evers set, controlled and ran the quiz in a masterly manner - the questions appeared to be just right. The evening was enjoyed by nearly 60 people and the fish and chips, which were hot and very tasty were supplied by Trident in Old Town. Watch this space for the next event. University of Brighton - Denton Rd Floodlighting - Report on meeting of 3rd March The meeting was organised by the Sports Faculty. The Student Union and Community Liaison were also represented. Approximately 50 residents attended. Sarah Hogg, head of sports and recreation, presented proposals for the evening utilisation of the all-weather pitch adjacent to the Hillbrow Sports Hall in Denton Road. The plan is to erect six towers, each up to 39ft/12m in height generating in total 24kw of illumination. Sports activity would take place on weekdays until 8.15pm, the pitch should then be cleared and the lights switched off. The reasons for the proposal were: * students very much want to use the pitch in the evening for recreation and training. * proposed increase in the rent for the use of Saffrons. * the cost and inconvenience of student travel between Hillbrow and alternative sports training sites. Residents strongly opposed the proposals: * Denton Rd is a prime residential area in the very centre of the Meads Conservation Area consisting mainly of substantial Victorian and Edwardian houses, the majority converted into flats. * Light pollution would substantially impact the amenity of the surrounding residences. * The present problems of parking and blocking of driveways would increase and extend into late evening adding to existing friction between residents and students. * Alternative and more suitable purpose built facilities already exist in the Borough. * The Community Liaison officer would only have authority to record and refer resident's complaints to executive managers. * Student anti-social behaviour and vandalism persist in the area around Welkin. Establishing control over this should be the first priority. MARCH 2008 | |

![]() Molly Sedgwick Molly was a strong supporter of MCA and we could always count on her being at our events and meetings and if she had a point to make she would make it. She is sadly missed. You may remember that she made a bequest of £1000 to MCA. It was the view of the Committee, endorsed at the last AGM, that a "feature" should be created which would mark her strong character, public spirit and long contribution to the Meads community. We wished for something that would reflect Molly's indomitable spirit, so dramatically demonstrated by her parachute jumps with the Red Devils for charity, even during her last illness. We looked at several options but I am now pleased to report that with the help of Parks and Gardens a suitable space for a permanent planting has been identified in Helen Gardens, just inside the entrance in the hedge, directly opposite All Saints. The "parachute motif" of the scheme was created by Parks and Gardens who, year on year, have made their designs for the Sea Front displays are outstanding features of the town. For the keen gardeners among you the outer border consists of a small geranium species with pink flowers and dark leaves, inside are three triangles of golden-green Marjoram. The centre of the bed has a taller purple Cordyline with smaller ones in each of the three outer beds, as illustrated. When the work has been completed there will be a commemorative plaque and a suitable ceremony. She was great lady and we are delighted she will now be properly remembered. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2008 Membership For those of you who pay your subscription on an annual basis, your subscription of £5 is due by 1st January 2008.
